Defence & Aerospace Supplier Guidance:UK MOD Defence Industrial StrategyPublication date: 2007
Launched in December 2005, the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) Defence Industrial Strategy (DIS) aims to improve how military equipment, supplies and services are procured and supported.
Overview
UK MOD Defence Industrial Strategy (DIS) White Paper (Download PDF file) The DIS aims to provide greater clarity of the military industrial capabilities that need to be retained within the UK. Under the strategy the strengths and weakness of these key sectors will be evaluated and decisions made on how they should develop in the future. The initiative has support across key Government departments and industry, both of which will need to change if the UK is to maintain a robust and successful defence sector in the long term. The DIS will move forward through a series of different initiatives. Some of these have resulted in changes taking place very quickly; others will take many years to fully implement. What is common to all is the intention to improve the support provided to the Front Line and to deliver better value for taxpayers. Implementing the DISEnabling Acquisition Change (EAC): A study undertaken to examine the MOD’s ability to undertake Through Life Capability Management (TLCM), resulting in an EAC Report that made several recommendations. Defence Acquisition Change Programme (DACP): The single, coherent acquisition reform programme which has been initiated to deliver aspects of the cultural, behavioural, procedural and organisational change identified in the DIS and the recommendations from the EAC Report. DIS Version 2.0The DIS is in the process of being updated to consolidate achievements and reflect progress made, and to ensure that the DIS is current and relevant and sets out plans for further implementation for the upcoming two years. DIS Version 2.0 will provide an update on current thinking, clarifying the UK MOD commercial approach and will again examine the military industrial capabilities that need to be retained within the UK for security of supply and operational sovereignty reasons. As with the initial document, Version 2.0 will be developed with the assistance of other key governmental departments. Also as before, Industrial representatives throughout the supply chain will be engaged and consulted during the development using the Defence Industries Council and relevant Trade Associations as the major conduits.
